Sightseeing places
Imjingak Park
Imjingak Park is a place where the sorrow caused by the Korean War occurred in June 1950 and the conflict between the south and the north of Korea remains in.
There are a diversity of monuments including the monument in the Imjingang zone and the US soldier monument as well as Mangbaedan monument, Freedom Bridge, Bell of Peace in the Imjingak.
A train which goes to Shineuiju, the northern end of the Korean Peninsula before the division between two Koreans is exhibited in Imjingak Park.
Mangbaedan is located to enable displaced people whose hometown was the North Korea to bow down to their parents or family in North Korea during the New Year’s Day and Chuseok.
3,800,000 Korean and foreign visitors Imjingak Park visit each year as the Peace Tourist Spot where people meditate on sorrow of the division between two Koreans and pray for the unification.
Freedom Bridge & Dokgae Bridge (a part of Freedom Bridge)
“New Lane Towards Peace” opened on Dokgae Bridge within Imjingang Pyeonghwa-Nuri Park. The old train tracks that connected South Korea and North Korea before the Korean War is used as a platform to display messages of hope and peace.
Media train, a reproduction of an old passenger train car, displays media arts through a window that shows a broken Dokgae Bridge getting reconnected.
“New Lane Towards Peace” media art displays love for DMZ with finger heart photos and messages of hope from a global campaign that ran from December 14, 2018 to January 15, 2019.
Before the Korean War, Dokgae Bridge used to be the only way to travel from South Korea to North Korea. Currently the bridge is disconnected from the bombing during the Korean War.
Imjingak Peace Gondola
Completed in 2020, the Paju Imjingak Peace Gondola offers a birds-eye view of the DMZ while carrying its passengers across the Imjingang River.
The DMZ Gondola experience goes beyond the CCL (Civilian Control Line), and therefore passengers will be required to bring their passport or identification documents.
Each Gondola can carry up to 10 people with great visibility range during the 850-metre long trip.
After arrival, you will visit Peace observatory & Camp Greaves gallery.
Peace observatory has a pavilion with boardwalk bridge which is simulated the summit meeting place that the President Moon of South Korea and Mr. Kim jeong-eun of North Korea in 2018.
It has a great view of Imjingang River, Freedom Bridge and Imjingak Park as well.
Camp Greaves gallery is placed in a used a bowling hall for the soldiers in the past.
Overall the Imjingak Peace Gondola provides an excellent view of the DMZ and allows you to see many of the main sites from a unique vantage point, including a glance at Camp Greaves. Camp Greaves was the filming location of the drama “Descendants of the Sun”, as well as being famous for being home to the 506th Regiment where the main character of the drama “Band of Brothers” and “Saving Private Ryan” were stationed.
Odusan Unification Observatory
Located in Paju-si, Odusan Unification Observatory was established to console the feelings of dispersed families and provide an educational site for the unification education through B5F to 1F in 1992.
The observatory is situated in the northernmost ceasefire line of the western front where Hangang River, Seoul’s lifeline, and Imjingang River meet.
It offers a wide view of Songaksan Mountain in Gaeseong to the north and 63 Building in Seoul to the south. Also, it is a valuable unification security tourist attraction related to Imjingak, the 3rd Tunnel, and Panmunjeom (Joint Security Area) stretching along Freedom highway in the northeast.
Since its opening, many people have visited the observatory to feel the reality of the division, making this area the best national unification education site.
